Update: Mekenzie Leigh Guffey has applied for youthful offender status. While a date for a hearing on the request has not yet been set, she is scheduled for arraignment on August 1st.
From March: The 19 year old girl lived in the small northeast Alabama town of Hollywood, but she often traveled to Scottsboro for entertainment. It was at a McDonald’s in Scottsboro last December that she met the love of her life. He didn’t have a regular job, but that didn’t mean anything to Mekenzie; she was so proud of him that she took photos of them together and kept them on her phone–photos that were a little suggestive. She may have called herself a princess, but she stated on Facebook that she didn’t expect to spend all her time with the love of her life. In fact she was so happy with her life that she announced she didn’t care if her father was arrested in February for distributing drugs. After all, she was building her own new life.
Then Mekenzie found out she was pregnant. She says her family didn’t want any part of her, so she went to DHR for help. They asked about the father of her unborn child; that’s pretty standard since the state always tries to recoup its money via child support. What did it matter, they were in love; she told them his name and address. After all, she wanted him to be a part of the life of the baby she was to have on October 17th.
That’s when Mekenzie Leigh Guffey, 19, had a rude meeting with local police. The father of Mckenzie’s unborn child is only 14. Arrested on Friday and charged with second-degree rape, second-degree sex abuse, enticing a child for immoral purposes, traveling to meet a child for an unlawful sex act, possession of child pornography and dissemination of child pornography, her bail was over 25K. Mekenzie somehow posted bond earlier today, but now she faces a possible 20 year prison sentence and having to register as a sex offender for life. There’s been no official word from her 14 year old lover.
