On February 24th, retail giant J.C. Penney announced that it would be closing between 130 and 140 stores before the end of the year. Currently the department store chain operates almost 1K stores. Earlier this month Penney named 39 under-performing outlets that would be getting the axe; however, none of them was in Alabama.
At that time, Penney announced the remaining closures would be named in mid-March. Retail pundits expected the list to be made public on March 15th, a day associated with proverbial bad luck. No such list has yet been forthcoming. Many locals have speculated the Florence Mall store will be on the list of 100 or so sites still to be named. PNS will publish Penney’s press release as soon as it’s made public.
