Last night the Florence City School Board selected board employee Dr. Jimmy Shaw as the city’s new superintendent. Shaw is the first local school administrator to be chosen to oversee Florence City Schools since Rufus Hibbett. Mr. Hibbett retired in the mid-1960s.

While many believe a “new broom sweeps clean,” PNS feels there’s much to be said for local individuals overseeing local projects, offices, and boards. Only Bill Gullett and the beleaguered Britton Watson failed to vote for Shaw to replace Janet Womack who’s moving out of state due to family commitments.
