Update: Dr. James Cartwright has been sentenced to 12 months (suspended) and must register as a sex offender.
From February 2015:
James Daniel Cartwright, 55, a physician living in Limestone County and practicing in Madison, Alabama, has been arrested on four counts of sexual abuse that are alleged to have occurred in Limestone County. Cartwright is board certified in pediatric medicine, has been practicing for over 28 years, and has admitting privileges to both Huntsville and Crestwood Hospitals. Cartwright reportedly abandoned his practice in June 2014 and was living in Phenix City when arrested.
Cartwright is a 1986 graduate of the University of Florida School of Medicine in Gainesville and completed his residency in 1989 at the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham. Authorities say that Cartwright’s license to practice medicine in Alabama was not renewed after 2014 when he left Cornerstone Pediatrics in Madison, a practice he helped found; however, the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners lists Cartwright’s license as active.
Cartwright remains in the Limestone County Jail at this time. He is being represented by Patrick Tuten of Huntsville who issued this statement: “Dr. Cartwright is a well-respected physician in our community and has been for many years. The charges brought against him in Limestone County do not involve his former medical practice, or any patients or staff of that practice in any way whatsoever. We have known about this investigation for some time. Dr. Cartwright has not attempted to avoid this process in any manner and will mount a vigorous defense moving forward.”
