Jackie Smith Named Assoc. VP for ASU Academic Affairs

Athens State University is pleased to announce that Dr. Jackie Smith has recently been appointed as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Smith is an alumnus of Athens State and holds an M.S. in Management and an EdD in Higher Education Administration.

Dr. Smith joined Athens State University in 2006 as Assistant Professor of Management in the College of Business. In August 2012, she accepted an administrative assignment in the Provost’s Office. During that time, she provided leadership for a number of University initiatives including the implementation and continued growth of the Adult Degree Program, expansion of the University Testing Center, the implementation of graduate programs, relocation and expansion of the University Writing Center, and a number of successful accreditation activities.

In her new role as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Smith will continue to support these University services as well as the Library and the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment. In addition, she will also be involved in the management and documentation of the University’s Strategic Plan.

“These past few years have been so transitional for the University, and I am very grateful for the experiences learned and the friendships built along the way,” stated Dr. Smith, “I look forward to being a part of the promising future that lies ahead for Athens State University.”

Dr. Joe Delap, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, was also pleased with the news, saying, “I am delighted at the opportunity to continue the positive working relationship with Dr. Smith that I have enjoyed since joining the University last year. She brings tremendous expertise and experience to this new role.”

Dr. Smith’s role as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs went into effect on September 1, 2017. She and her husband, Phillip, reside in Decatur. Together, they have three sons and two grandchildren.
