BIO: Born into a blue collar family in Fairfield, Alabama – to a father who worked for U.S. Steel, and a stay-at-home mother – Doug Jones is a product and lifelong resident of the Magic City.
After graduating from Fairfield High School, he attended the University of Alabama, received his degree in Political Science, and discovered his interest and love for politics and public service. After his undergraduate career Mr. Jones attended the Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, and served as the president of the school’s Young Democrats chapter.
Soon after graduating law school, he was appointed as Assistant U.S. Attorney. This gave Mr. Jones the unique privilege to serve the citizens of Alabama as an appointed public official before starting work as a criminal defense lawyer.
From 1998 to 2001, he served as the United States District Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. The first year of his appointment was also the year of the Birmingham women’s clinic bombing – a scene that he was on site for, just minutes after the explosion, that impressed upon Jones for the rest of his life. During that same year, the 1963 Birmingham 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing case was reopened. As the federal prosecutor, Mr. Jones led the successful prosecution of this historic “cold case” in which two former Ku Klux Klansmen were convicted almost forty years after the crime was committed.
As a founding member of the Birmingham, Alabama, law firm of Jones & Hawley, PC, Mr. Jones’ practice concentrates on complex civil actions, False Claims Act investigations and litigation, securities litigation, environmental and white collar criminal litigation.
Mr. Jones is married to Louise New Jones and has three children and two grandchildren
