Yesterday the 37 year old Johnson drove to nearby Overton County to meet a 13 year old girl. Instead he was met by detectives who charged him with attempted statutory rape and electronic solicitation.

As coach of a soft drink sponsored team called the Tennessee Orange Crush, Johnson coached girls in the 11 to 13 age bracket. He often communicated with girls on other teams after meeting them at tournaments. Johnson had recently come under scrutiny in Columbia and was dismissed as softball coach two weeks ago. He had planned to move his family to Arkansas, but his wife had refused to join him, instead taking out a protection from abuse order last week.

The parents of one 13 year old became suspicious of Johnson and took copies of his messages to Overton County detectives. When a detective assumed the role of the young girl, he accepted Johnson’s offer to meet. Upon arrival of the alleged pedophile, the detective arrested Johnson and placed him in the Overton County lockup where he remains on 200K bond.
