From Calhoun:

Calhoun Community College and the Calhoun Foundation announces the first ever “Jazz Under the Stars”, scheduled for Thursday, April 27, 2017, from 6:00-8:00 pm on the lawn of the Alabama Center for the Arts, 133 2nd Avenue, NE, in downtown Decatur (directly across from the Princess Theatre).

The free, family-friendly outdoor concert will feature music and vocal performances by Calhoun’s Jazz Band, under the direction of Jimmy Cantrell.  The band will be accompanied by Harvey Thompson, James K. Simpson and Jena Morris-Simpson.  According to Cantrell, the band’s line-up for the evening will include such well-known jazz tunes and classic songs as “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” “Under the Boardwalk,” “Unchained Melody,” and “When a Man Loves a Woman”.

“We are so excited to bring this evening of musical entertainment to downtown Decatur,” commented Calhoun President Dr. Jim Klauber.  “We invite people from across the north Alabama/southern Tennessee region to come out with your lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic dinner and join us for what we know will be a wonderful evening.”

“This community continues to be extremely supportive of Calhoun and our students, and we see this as a way to say ‘thank you,” Klauber added.

Sponsors for the event include PMT Publishing, Inc.; Business Alabama; Birmingham Home and Garden; Robins and Morton Architects; and Southern Comfort Pools.

A ticketed, pre-event dinner is also planned for the evening.  A limited number of tables are still available to the dinner.  For more information, visit www.calhoun/jazz.  All proceeds from the dinner and sponsorships will go toward a Calhoun Foundation Endowed scholarship for fine arts students in honor of Mr. Cantrell, who will retire this May from Calhoun after serving on the college’s faculty for 28 years.
