A Forgotten Jewel: Lewis Field

by Staff Reports

For all too long Lewis Field in West Florence was neglected. Now thanks in part to District 1 Councilwoman Kaytrina P. Simmons, that’s changing. Lewis Field is located off Pruitt Street and was named in memory of Mr. W. H. Lewis, a long-time principal at Burrell-Slater School. Mr. Lewis was a graduate of Morehouse University and a local champion of education for African-American students in this area.

Fun Day at Lewis Field – July 2017

The ball field had fallen into disrepair, but during 2017, the restrooms were renovated and much needed handrails were added. There’s still much to do at Lewis Field, and we hope soon to bring our readers information on how this can be accomplished. In the meantime, thanks to Ms. Simmons for her tireless efforts on behalf of District 1.
